Hope Shines, an official 501(c)3, accepts both monetary and in-kind donations throughout the year. We are honored by donations that help us carry out our mission, and are forever grateful to the donors who help us make the lives of children in need a little brighter.
Here’s how your donation is used:
We seek to put money back into the local communities as much as possible, and so we buy a lot of materials once we arrive in Rwanda. Some of the items and services purchased for the camps include:
- a new t-shirt for every child
- tote bags for every child which doubles as a school or market bag
- school supplies
- drinking water and juice
- cook’s services for the children’s hot lunches
- plates, cups, and other clean kitchen supplies
- daily hot lunches with meat and vegetables and additional foodstuffs
- fire wood for cooking
- local workers to help with logistics
- reusable water bottles for every child
- translator services
- transportation services for volunteers to and from camp
- teachers for the children
- after school tutoring programs with a meal
In-Kind Donations
We also welcome in-kind donations, and bring a ton of supplies with us too; some school and personal hygiene items cost a lot more in Rwanda than they do in the States, so we prefer to carry these items with us. Besides, we love telling the kids their gifts came direct from the USA! We accept the following:
- school supplies (paper, glue, pencils, pens, markers, and scissors)
- craft supplies (sequins, markers, glitter, stickers, etc.)
- toiletries (soap, toothpaste, etc.)
- small toys
- books
